Two latest articles

Here are this week’s Lasso articles. One is an editorial on making time to read, and the other is a review of Harold &  Maude for our series “Be Kind, Rewind,” in which editors recommend their favorite vintage films and music.

Latest article

Here’s my article on Occupy Denton from today’s edition of the TWU Lasso. It’s straight news as opposed to my editorial last week.

Wizard World and Texas State Fair

After a great weekend at the Texas State Fair, a friend and I decided to make the trip to Austin for Wizard World Comic Con Nov. 11-13. All five of the children from the original “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” will make an appearance, but of course they aren’t children anymore.

Here we are at the fair, which is more fun than I remembered — maybe because we did as many things as possible in 2 hours, went to see West Side Story, then left.

Occupy Wall Street: What the Mainstream Media Isn’t Saying

Here’s an editorial I wrote for the TWU Lasso wherein I call out members of the mainstream media for coverage of Occupy Wall Street I feel is misleading/inaccurate.

Recent Lasso Articles

I dyed my hair, too.

I’m having a great time at TWU and the Lasso. I’ve already published 4 articles (and edited 4 issues, whew!) since the beginning of the semester.

Here are two of my articles so far. Both are columns/opinion; one is about the fairness/unfairness of life and how to handle it, and one is for a series called “Music of our Memories.” The series lets different editors/staff talk about music that’s tied to a certain era in their lives, and I wrote about Simon and Garfunkel.

New university, new paper

I started training last week for The Lasso, Texas Woman’s University’s newspaper. I’ll be their copy editor, and my first article is already out! You can read it at the link below:

I’m really looking forward to working at The Lasso. Soon, I’m writing a 3-part series on the natural science of the campus: botany, geology, and biology.

Mayborn Conference, here I come!

Thanks to the encouragement (and maybe just a little goading) of my professors Rori Harrington and Daniel Rodrigue, I decided last month to work up an entry to Mayborn’s Student Biography Contest.

I wrote about Birgit Somer, who runs Rainbow Wildlife Rescue, which has just moved to Weatherford, TX. They are in the process of rebuilding and are closed until Fall 2011. Birgit is a tireless worker to rehabilitate wildlife, and has an incredible story.

You’ll be able to read the biography soon in The Dallas Morning News — because my entry was one of the 10 chosen! That also means I get to attend the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference on scholarship. Friday we’ll have a day-long workshop with James McGrath Morris, and some time to revise our entries based on his suggestions afterward. I’m really excited about all of that — it’s a great opportunity and I’m honored to be chosen.

Thank you, Rori and Daniel, and I’d encourage others to enter next year’s contest.  The contest is open to high school and community college students, and all contest information for next year will be at this link: https://journalism.unt.edu/maybornconference/student-biography-contest

League for Innovation Contest

I was very excited to learn that in this year’s League for Innovation in the Community College contest, my poems placed first and third at Brookhaven. The first-place poem went to regional competition, and won first place there, so it continues to the national competition!

Here’s a link to Brookhaven’s write-up of the awards:

Computer Literacy Class Project

Chris and I made this for a class assignment. The project was to come up with a technology-related invention and make a video of some kind presenting the idea. Certain elements, such as cost, were required to be included. We had a lot of fun working on it together! He did the editing, lighting, camera operations, and I wrote the script, researched the product, and played piano. Oh yes, Chris is also the puppeteer.

I’m still waiting to hear on the places for this year’s League for Innovation contest, but I suspect this certificate means the places have been determined and my poem didn’t place. That’s cool, national merit is good enough for me. :)
